A first page that is detailed yet concise, passionate yet professional, conclusive yet stage-setting serves as an introduction to everything that follows in the proposal. “Writing a Strong First Page” will provide researchers with tips and ideas for capturing reviewer’s attention from the very start of a research proposal and will include agency-specific advice.

Receiving a grant, contract, or cooperative agreement often requires engagement prior to the release of a solicitation or request for proposals. This session will introduce researchers to some of the more common ways of helping either shape a solicitation or better understand the upcoming solicitation.

How can I find potential collaborators?

There are several portals and databases that can be used to search for potential collaborators. For more information on these as well as collaboration spaces, centers and institutes, core facilities, and other tools and resources, visit the Collaboration section of the Research Gateway.

Do all proposals require institutional review prior to submission?

Generally, proposals to external sponsors require institutional review. If in doubt, contact Sponsored Projects and Contracting Services for clarification.

How do I find funding opportunities?

We recommend that you take a proactive role in identifying relevant funding opportunities. To assist you, we have provided helpful resources including a list of hand-curated funding opportunities for Early Investigators, and a compilation of search databases, funding sources, and distribution lists.

How do I create a budget for my proposal?

Visit the Build a Budget section of the Research Gateway to get started, and contact your departmental/unit business office for assistance.

Who may serve as a PI?

Principal Investigator (PI) eligibility is described in the Getting Started section of the Research Gateway.

What programs does RDS offer that are targeted to early investigators?

RDS offers several programs on an annual or biannual basis.

What is the proposal submission process at the UA?

Sponsored proposals are submitted for review and approval through the UA’s electronic research administration system, UAccess Research. Work with your departmental/unit business office for routing and submission of the proposal to Sponsored Projects & Contracting Services (SP&CS). SP&CS will submit the proposal on behalf of the institution.
