The University of Arizona Cancer Center (UACC) can nominate one applicant.

Purpose of Award:

The UACC is seeking nominations for the V Scholar Grant call which supports adult cancer research. This award supports tenure-track faculty early in their cancer research career by funding projects that are either laboratory-based fundamental research or translational research. The V Scholar Grant supports tenure-track faculty in the early stages of their independent cancer research careers. This grant mechanism is designed to advance exceptional early-career investigators at the Assistant Professor level and position them to successfully compete for larger, sustaining grants such as NIH R01 awards or equivalent funding.

Research on ANY adult cancer type will be funded in this call. Research areas not included in this scope are epidemiology, behavioral science, and health services research.

Award Amount:

• The total grant award is $800,000 over four years, with annual payments of $200,000. No indirect costs allowed.
• The V Foundation follows NIH Guidelines regarding salary caps. Institutions are welcome to supplement a grant recipient’s salary with institutional funds if desired.  

Applicant Eligibility:

Nominee must meet all of the following criteria by the nomination due date:

• Nominated by their Cancer Center Director or similar high ranking research official.
• Employed at a non-profit research institution (e.g., 501c3, Section 170).
• Either a US Citizen or a permanent legal resident in the US.
• Have completed at least two years postdoctoral (MD or PhD) fellowship training. For MDs, a minimum of one year is acceptable if one year is standard for their specialty
• Clinical scientists must have full institutional support (e.g., dedicated lab space, protected research time, start-up funds).
• Hold a full-time, tenure-track or tenured faculty position (e.g., eligible to apply as PI on an R01 at their institution). Non-promotable adjunct, affiliated, temporary, part-time, or acting faculty positions are not eligible.
• Have been appointed to their first full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position within five years of the nomination due date and not yet promoted to Associate Professor.
  • Extensions to the five-year limit may be granted on a case-by-case basis for nominees who have taken parental or other qualifying leave during this period.

Purpose of Award
The UACC is seeking nominations for the Pediatric Cancer Research Grant which is restricted to pediatric cancer research. Research on ANY pediatric cancer type can be funded. Research areas not included in this scope are epidemiology, behavioral science, and health services research.

Applicant Eligibility
Nominee must meet all of the following criteria by the nomination due date:

• Nominated by their Cancer Center Director or similar high ranking research official.
• Employed at a non-profit research institution (e.g., 501c3, Section 170).
• Either a US Citizen or a permanent legal resident in the US

Funding Information per mechanism

• V Scholar: A four-year grant totaling $800,000 (paid in annual installments of $200,000). No indirect costs allowed.
• Translational: A four-year grant totaling $800,000 (paid in annual installments of $200,000). This amount includes both direct and indirect costs. Indirect costs are allowed up to 10% of total grant amount.
• All Star: A five-year grant totaling, $1,000,000 (paid in annual installments of $200,000). This amount includes both direct and indirect costs. Indirect costs are allowed up to 10% of total grant amount.

The V Foundation follows NIH salary cap guidelines. Institutions may supplement a grant recipient’s salary with institutional funds, if desired.

For the V Foundation Breast Cancer Research Game-Changer Grant 2025 funding opportunity, the University of Arizona Cancer Center (UACC) can nominate one applicant.

Purpose of Award:

This request for applications will support breast cancer research specifically at the University of Arizona Cancer Center. Hooters of America, LLC raised these funds through their local franchisees, for the 2024 “Give A Hoot” in the fight against breast cancer campaign and donated them to the V Foundation to support programs at regional cancer centers for breast cancer research. For these raised funds, the University of Arizona Cancer Center was selected as the designated recipient of regional funds in the amount of $186,000. This request for applications is specifically for Breast Cancer Research.

Applicant Eligibility:

• Nominee must meet all of the following criteria by the nomination due date:
  • Employed at the nominating institution and nominated by their Cancer Center Director or similar high ranking research official.
  • Must be either a US Citizen or have a legal permit (temporary or permanent) to work in the US.
  • Hold a full-time faculty appointment at the Assistant Professor or Assistant Professor-equivalent level or above. Non-promotable, adjunct, affiliated, temporary, part-time or acting faculty positions are not eligible for Principal Investigator nomination.

Purpose of Award:

The UACC is seeking nominations for the Translational Adult Cancer Research Grant which advances basic laboratory discoveries towards clinical use, ultimately improving human health and is restricted to adult cancer research.

This Translational grant is restricted to adult cancer research in the preclinical or translational space with a focus on bench-to-bedside strategies. Research on ANY adult cancer type can be funded. Applicants may propose cancer research that moves a novel strategy from the laboratory into a human clinical trial or uses specimens from a clinical trial to test hypotheses, develop biomarkers, or mechanisms. The research must apply in a direct way to human beings within 3 years from the end of the grant. If biomarker research is undertaken, a validation set or independent clinical trial is essential. A plan for biomarker validation, if applicable, must be included in any proposal. The endpoint of the project should be the planning or initiation of a new clinical trial or conducting an investigator-initiated trial with laboratory correlates that test hypotheses. Research areas not included in this scope are epidemiology, behavioral science, and health services research.

The University of Arizona Cancer Center (UACC) can nominate one applicant for the V Foundation Women Scientists Innovation Award for Cancer Research 2025.

Purpose of Award:

The UACC is seeking nominations for the Women Scientists Innovation Award for Cancer Research which supports women cancer researchers and is restricted to adult cancer research.

Sustaining the careers of women in research and preventing the loss of women from academic careers focused on cancer is paramount to accomplishing the V Foundation’s mission. Women are underrepresented in many STEM fields and this disparity becomes more pronounced further along the career continuum. To make significant progress towards Victory Over Cancer®, we need all voices at the table. The V Foundation’s Women Scientists Innovation Award for Cancer Research helps promote inclusion for women in cancer research while supporting the most cutting-edge proposals.

Applicant Eligibility

Nominee must meet all of the following criteria by the nomination due date:

• Self-identify as a woman
• Nominated by their Cancer Center Director or similar high ranking research official.
• Employed at a non-profit research institution (e.g., 501c3, Section 170).
• See additional criteria for Translational and V Scholar mechanisms listed in corresponding RFA and Supporting Documents.

UACC Selection Process and Next Steps:

The selected investigator will be notified they are the nominee and will work with UACC to complete the nomination form, a letter of recommendation, and finalize the financial worksheet (only if applicable). The V Foundation will then invite the nominee via email to complete the online application.

UACC's selection announcement will occur by January 29, 2025.

The sponsor nomination due date is January 30, 2025 by 5pm EST.

The sponsor full application due date is February 28, 2025 by 5pm EST.

The V Clinical Scholar Award supports the careers of clinicians who will become leaders in developing programs of clinical trials that are sequential and based on hypothesis–driven research. V Clinical Scholars will be expected to lead a program of hypothesis-driven clinical trials, initiating, and completing multiple projects overseen by clinical and laboratory mentors who have a track record for conducting hypothesis-driven research with a strong translational component, often in collaboration with investigators from other disciplines.

The total amount of the grant is $200,000, paid in two annual installments of $100,000. Only direct costs of the research are supported by this award.
